When the Tanks Burst
On January 15th, 1919, Boston was struck by a disaster unlike any other. A massive tank filled with syrup burst open in the city's North End, unleashing a wave of sticky sweetness that swept through the streets like a tsunami. The flood, reaching heights 25 feet in some areas, was catastrophic. Structures succumbed under the weight of the sticky goo.
The aftermath was heartbreaking. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and many more sustained wounds. The flood also caused extensive damage to property, leaving a trail of molasses carnage in its wake.
